A new page o' doodles

Here's a new page of doodles. Rather than gangposting a whole bunch at once I'm going to try to the post them somewhat closer tp when I actually draw them.

For those of you playing along at home, this is a page from my Moleskine A4 Folio Sketchbook drawn with a medium nib Faber-Castell Pitt artist pen (sanguine 188).

I'm trying to make sure I allow at least a little time every day to draw, doodle, cartoon, or just create something. Here are two new pages from my sketchbook.

My first two attempts at cartooning with acrylic paints

I've been drawing as long as I can remember, but I've never ventured far from pens and markers. I only dipped my toe into colored markers a few times in the past year or so, so almost everything I've ever drawn has been with a black marker or pen on a sketchbook page or piece of paper. To mix things up my wife and I signed up for an Acrylic Class at the Elmhurst Art Museum. We did a still life at the first class, which was the first time I've touched a paintbrush since grade school. It was quite satisfying to actually paint something, especially something serious since even when I set out to make a more traditional drawing it tends to end up turning into a cartoon.

But I was anxious to see if I could use acrylics to do something goofier and more fun in a style similar to my doodles. Last night I sat at the dining room and knocked out these two cartoon paintings. To ease into it I started out with some familiar. Both of these are based on reoccurring doodles in my repertoire. I'm still trying to get comfortable with using brushes, mixing colors, etc, but I had a lot of fun and am happy with how they turned out. Especially since this is only my 2nd and 3rd times putting brush to canvas.

Karooooga! My own dumb ass take on a Big Daddy Roth style hot rod cartoon.

Ever since I first flipped through my older brother's hot rod magazine I was hooked on those Big Daddy Roth style monsters driving cars. But no matter how hard I tried, I could not draw a bad ass hot rod. I can't even draw a dumb ass hot rod. Cars totally allude my cartoon ability. Tonight I found a photo of a Shriner car that i had cut out for a collage but never used. I decided to gluestick it to a sketchbook page and draw around it. I didn't really have a plan, but I ended up with something vaguely in the Ed Roth concept.

some new doodles to break in a new sketchbook

After years of using the classic 5 x 8.25 Moleskine sketchbook as my primary sketchbook I decided that I'd be better served with a bigger page so I'm not always cramming everything together. Plus I want to try out brush pens more, but they're not as fine as the pens I normally use. So now I'm using a Moleskine Folio A4 sketchbook, which, in theory, should give me a bit more room to try new thing. Of course it's probably just another case of me buying yet another sketchbook with out making much headway in the last one. But a boy can dream, can't he?

ABOVE LEFT: Pasted onto the page is the this collage. I didn't know what else to do with it. Plus it also covered up some wicked marker bleed through from a pen I had tested to make sure that didn't happen.

the First Doodles of 2013 - a new sketchbook just itching to be filled.

Rather than keep doodling in the sketchbook I've been using on-and-off all last year I decided to start the year off with a new sketchbook. Below is a cover page (?!?!) featuring me and my three cats.

My favorite drawing pen (black medium tipped Faber-Castell Pitt Artist Pen) ran out of ink and apparently I forgot to restock backups, so I decided to give another try to brush tip markers. Below are two pages of doodles, really just trying to see if I can control the lines at all. Sort of digging the results, which means I might give the pen some more doodle time and see if we can become friends.

Crap from the Sketchpad: Charlie Brown's Gotta Rock

One of my go-to's when doodling and I don't know what else to draw are bastardized Charlie Browns. Another go-to is the Black Flag bars logo. Both are easy to draw. Eventually they had to end up in one doodle.

I just learned I can't draw Doc Martens. I've always known I can't draw a convincing Charlie Brown.

Disnëyzende Neubauten

Once the fervor over Disney's Joy Division t-shirt dies down I think calm heads will prevail and everyone will realize that the real issue is the lack of selection in the Disney post-punk collection. So in an attempt to get ahead of problem, here's my suggestion for the next mouseification: Einstürzende Neubauten.
